What are the stats?

When I first started breastfeeding, the only people that collected large scale information on breastfeeding rates were formula companies. Of course there’s a conflict of interest here. Now we’ve got data collected by the USA Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The quick summary for Wisconsin is:

Breastfeeding initiation: 67.9%

Any breastfeeding at 6 months: 39.2%

Any breastfeeding at 12 months: 16.4%

Exclusive breastfeeding at 3 months: 35.9%

Exclusive breastfeeding at 6 months:  9.0%

If you want to see information for all the states, here’s the CDC Breastfeeding Report Card. There’s lots more to check out at the CDC’s page: how the data was collected, planned studies, changes over time, information about attitudes and breastfeeding support across the country.
