Resource links for health care providers

I just added a category of links on my library page for health care providers. These are resources for people that are working with breastfeeding women and babies that need information about medications, evidence-based protocols for common situations, and donor milk. I will add more over time.

Dads vulnerable to depression too

It looks like we just plain need to pay attention to new parents. Both new mothers and fathers need care and support. Here’s a link to an NPR story summarizing a study of new fathers and depression. Pregnancy-related depression comes as a surprise to most men it hits. Psychologist Will Courtenay of Berkeley, Calif., has…

Latching On – the movie

It’s not a how-to movie but a cultural documentary about breastfeeding in America. Here is the trailer:

Wisconsin’s new breastfeeding law

Governor Doyle just signed a new law that protects mothers and babies that are breastfeeding in public. Breastfeeding in public has always been legal in Wisconsin but in the past mothers didn’t have protection from harassment. Now they do – and protection with a penalty for the person that tells them to stop.  The law…

Eating well

When we’re thinking about feeding babies the very best food – mother’s milk – we should also think about feeding the rest of the family well. Rather than hiding from the camera all those celebrities are parading their baby bumps. It’s ok to be pregnant these days. What if breastfeeding could become just as…

What’s Wrong With This Picture?

Here’s a video of a baby playing on the floor: What’s wrong with the picture? It is only a baby. No mother. No father. No grandma or grandpa or aunt or neighbor or big sister. Babies need adults to thrive and survive. In modern society we often forget about this without even being aware that…

Lord Voldemort and breastfeeding?

I confess I’m a fan of the Harry Potter books. So I enjoyed seeing the title of a working paper published by Australian Centre for Economic Research on Health: ‘Voldemort’ and Health Professional Knowledge of Breastfeeding — Do Journal Titles and Abstracts Accurately Convey Findings on Differential Health Outcomes for Formula Fed Infants? For a…
