Harlem Hospital just became the first New York City hospital to be designated a “Baby Friendly” hospital by the Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative. This WHO/UNICEF program helps birth places around the world better support breastfeeding. According to the Harlem Hospital press release, there are more than 19,000 maternity facilities worldwide that have received the Baby Friendly designation, while only 64 facilities have been certified in the United States. I want to point out that we have two of those 64 here in Madison: Meritor Hospital and The Madison Birth Center. We’re way ahead of NYC! Isn’t Madison a great place to live?
